Apollo 11 Experiment Still Going After 40 Years

The Apollo 11 astronauts returned from the moon 40 years ago today, but they left behind more than footprints. An experiment they placed on the moon's surface is still running to this day.

The Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment is the only moon investigation to continuously operate since the Apollo 11 mission. The experiment studies the Earth-Moon system and beams the data to labs around the world, including NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

"Yes, we are still going," said James Williams, a JPL scientist involved with the experiment, in an e-mail interview.

Data from the ranging experiment has been used to learn — among other things — that the moon has a fluid core and is moving away from the Earth, and that Einstein's Theory of Relativity is accurate.

The instrument itself, called a lunar laser ranging reflector, was originally intended to accurately calculate the distance between the Earth and moon by measuring the round-trip time of a laser fired from Earth to a reflector on the instrument.

The average distance from the centers of the Earth and the moon was calculated to be 238,897 miles (384,467 km). NASA scientists say the measurement is one of the most precise distance measurements ever made and is equivalent to determining the distance between Los Angeles and New York to one-hundredth of an inch.

The accuracies will continue to improve as observatories on Earth improve their technology.

"Technical improvements at the observatories rejuvenate the lunar laser ranging effort," Williams said in 2004, when the experiment turned 35. Williams is one of four JPL scientists that analyze the data from the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment. "When the range accuracy improves, it is like getting a new experiment on the Moon."

The instrument itself does not require any power to operate on the moon (only the lasers on Earth do), so it's likely to be in service for many years to come. Scientists at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Washington are working with a new lunar ranging instrument that has significantly improved accuracy at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico.

"The usefulness of continued improvements in range determinations for further advancing our understanding of the Earth-moon system will keep the lunar reflectors in service for years to come," Williams said.

The lunar measuring, ongoing for 40 years now, is by no means the longest-running experiment. Physicist Thomas Parnell set up a slow pitch-drop experiment in 1927 that has continued long after his death, with about one drop of the gooey stuff falling each decade. Other experiments still underway date back to the mid-1800s.

This new, high specification handset is being termed as the best phone from the Sony Ericsson stable and there is many a comparison to the Apple iPhone being made. With the 12-million pixels of imaging resolution and S60 5th edition platform, the excitement for this mobile phone is completely understandable. Without in any way compromising on the user-friendliness, the Idou mobile phone has captured all the best features of a cameraphone and a smartphone and then some more.

LG are very well known for coming out with beautiful and high-spec mobile phones, and the LG KM730 is no different. The LG GM730 is a stunner of a mobile phone which measures 109.8 x 56.5 x 11.9 mm, so it definitely is not a small phone, but it slots into a similar size range that include the iphone, Nokia N96 and the Samsung Omnia.

The touch screen of the Samsung Omnia HD is capacitive rather that resistive, so the screen is much more responsive to finger flicks.
Since the screen of the Omnia HD is wider than that of the its rival its virtual keyboard is bigger and more finger friendly than the virtual key board of the Tocco Ultra Edition.
The Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra however scores a point over the i8910 by proffering a slider keypad. This keypad is meant to cater to customers who are not comfortable with the absence of physical keys. The Omnia HD being a wholly touch operated phone does not have this advantage.

Camera
The Tocco Ultra has an 8 Mega pixel camera. The handset has to be slid open to reveal the lens, which is an odd feature. The camera has an auto focus feature to allow people with the shakiest hands to click the perfect snap. About the new four door, seven seater (5 adults + 2 kids), all electric eco monster from Tesla — the Model S. We’ve seen the pictures of the gorgeous beast and we’ve had our chance to let the lust settle.

But the thing that’s been bothering me, and surely many of you, is that it still feels like Tesla is making cars with a decidedly un-populist bent. Tesla has been claiming for a long time now that their business plan is to start with the high end market, make some money, learn some lessons, and subsequently release cars that the rest of us can afford — using that money and those lessons to get there.The sedan—which will cost about half as much as the Roadster—is intended to be a more practical and affordable alternative to their $109,000 sports car. Tesla anticipates a base price of about $49,900 after taking into account the electric vehicle federal tax credit of $7,500. If you include the cost of buying gas (at $4 per gallon of course) the price drops down to about $35,000.

Owning a Tesla is a separate matter. While the performance numbers are incredible, the two-seater design makes it impractical for many beyond just being a toy. The sticker price of $109,000 also puts it out of reach for nearly all of the car buying public.

What we need is an electric car that will serve the needs of the everyman. Enter the Tesla Model S: it’s a four door sedan that’s powered from your wall socket. While definitely won’t be getting 0-60 times of under 4 seconds with the Model S, pricing is something that’s within reach for a greater part of the populace.

Tesla Motors just revealed in its newsletter that the Model S will have an anticipated base price of $57,400. The price will effectively become $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500.

The company also explains that because of relatively inexpensive maintenance and refueling, the lifetime ownership cost will be closer to cars with far lower sticker prices.

Tesla will unveil its Model S prototype sedan March 26 at the Tesla design studio inside the SpaceX rocket factory, in Hawthorne, California. The company believes that the Model S will likely be the world's first mass-produced, highway-capable EV when it rolls off the assembly line in late 2011.

Sprint's latest messaging phone, the LG Rumor 2, isn't bad. But the Samsung Rant, which the carrier is currently selling at the same price ($49, with contract), is better in every way. If the Rant didn't exist, we could come up with reasons to recommend this phone, but given Sprint's current lineup, the Rumor 2 doesn't really make much sense. A bit smaller and lighter than the 4.2-ounce Rant, the Rumor measures 4.4 by 2.1 by 0.7 inches (HWD). Initially, it looks like a slightly thick, rounded candy-bar phone, with glossy keys and a bright, sharp, 2-inch, 320-by-240-pixel screen. The display offers a bit more real estate than the Rant's, which heavy e-mailers and Web surfers will appreciate. Slide the screen to the left to reveal a roomy four-row keyboard of slick but sufficiently raised keys.

The Rant's keyboard is just as big, and its keys are less slippery, making for an even better typing experience. When you pop out the Rumor's keyboard, the screen image rotates into landscape mode for typing. On the sides of the phone you'll find a camera button, volume controls, a 2.5mm headphone jack, and a microSD memory card slot that worked fine with our 16GB SanDisk MicroSD card. It's not a smartphone, but the Rumor 2 is designed to excel at text messaging, e-mail, and IM. Sprint's messaging phones handle e-mail better than any of the other carriers', thanks to Sprint's excellent Seven e-mail program, which pushes most consumer e-mail accounts to your phone and can sync e-mail with Microsoft Exchange. But that's not a unique feature—the Rant has the same software, and runs faster on Sprint's 3G network. As a voice phone, the Rumor 2 is okay, but not great. I found reception to be a bit below average on my tests. The earpiece and speakerphone are both loud enough, but the latter sounds very hollow. Transmissions through the earpiece sounded a bit tinny, with audible background noise. The phone supports Bluetooth headsets and features speaker-independent voice dialing. It paired with our Altec Lansing BackBeat stereo Bluetooth headset and mono Plantronics Voyager 520 without problems (although the call control buttons didn't work on the BackBeat, and call quality was very wobbly).

Calls sounded better (if somewhat hissy) on the Voyager, and the call control buttons worked properly. Battery life was excellent, with more than 6 hours of talk time. The Rumor 2 isn't a very good multimedia phone. The music player is difficult to find in the phone's UI, and it doesn't sync with Windows Media Player or any other PC-based software (although you can drag and drop files when the handset is connected with a USB cable).

The phone plays only MP3 music files (not WMA or AAC), and it won't run in the background while you're doing other things. The music player's interface is slick-looking, though, showing thumbnails of album art. There's no video playback support. Music sounded fine through the BackBeat Bluetooth stereo headset. The 1.3-megapixel camera takes soft, noisy photos, and it doesn't record video. The Rant features a 2MP camera and records video. Perplexingly, the Rumor 2 doesn't feature Sprint's new One Click carousel-based user interface, which we loved on the Rant. One Click lets you easily customize your home screen and add widgets, and it's available on many new Sprint phones. You do get a decent Web browser, Infraware Polaris 6.01,

which can display desktop Web pages in a basic way. Since this is a Sprint phone, you can also add the excellent Opera Mini mobile browser if you choose. But you'll still be surfing on Sprint's slower 1X network. The Samsung Rant moves much faster over 3G. The Rumor 2 features GPS, which works with Sprint's for-pay navigation service, its child locator service, or the free Google Maps. But because of that poky 1X connection, maps can be very slow to load. Performance on the JBenchmark Java benchmark tests wasn't great, either, so game play won't be as fun as it is on faster phones—like the Rant. The Rumor has 22MB of built-in memory. With the Samsung Rant available at the same price,

I can't think of a good reason to recommend the LG Rumor 2. If you want a messaging phone on Sprint, the Rant will have you raving, while the Rumor will likely disappoint. And if you're looking for a little more in terms of e-mail, IM, and Web browsing, check out the inexpensive Palm Centro, which is a true smartphone with a feature phone's price tag.

The multi-touch controls familiar to Apple iPhone users will be built-in to Microsoft's Windows 7.Windows Touch will be a "first class way to interact with your PC alongside mouse and keyboard," said the firm.

Microsoft believes multi-touch PCs will become popular in retail, public spaces, on laptops and "kitchen PCs".

Some Windows machines already feature rudimentary touch input and Apple is also reportedly adding touch for displays in its Snow Leopard OS update.

A small number of multi-touch PCs are already on the market, including the HP TouchSmart and the Dell Latitude XT, and Microsoft hopes Windows 7 will create a new ecosystem of devices that take advantage of touch.

The latest generation of Apple's laptops also feature a glass trackpad that supports multi-touch gestures.

Microsoft has launched a Windows Touch Logo program, which will help consumers understand if a machine has been optimised for the new control system.

Windows Touch will features controls such as tap and double tap, drag, scroll, zoom, flick and rotate.

In a posting on the Windows 7 engineering blog, the team leading Touch developments said: "Quite a few folks have been a little sceptical of touch, often commenting about having fingerprints on their monitor or something along those lines.

Sprint unveils cities to receive 4G WiMax in 2009 and 2010

Sprint announced that it will be deploying WiMax services in then cities within the United States in 2009, and five additional cities in 2010. So far, WiMax access is only available in Baltimore.

"The availability of Sprint 4G in more places this year and our aggressive expansion of Sprint 4G service demonstrates our commitment to provide 4G capabilities and devices nationwide for our business, consumer and government customers. This year, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia and Portland will get WiMax . In the next two years, Sprint plans to launch multiple 4G devices including a single-mode 4G data card, devices embedded in laptops, a small-office/home-office broadband modem and also a tri-mode phone.

Despite its poor fourth quarter earnings, Sprint is moving forward with its plans to deliver 4G WiMax. Verizon Wireless has shared future plans for Long Term Evolution (LTE), which directly competes with WiMax. Testing of LTE has begun in Minneapolis, Columbus and Northern New Jersey. Additionally, the company is testing the product in Budapest, Duesseldorf and Madrid in Europe.

Now complete, the National Ignition Facility could soon create controlled fusion using lasers. The most energetic laser system in the world, designed to produce nuclear fusion--the same reaction that powers the sun--is up and running. Within two to three years, scientists expect to be creating fusion reactions that release more energy than it takes to produce them. If they're successful, it will be the first time this has been done in a controlled way--in a lab rather than a nuclear bomb, that is--and could eventually lead to fusion power plants.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF), at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), comprises 192 lasers that fire simultaneously at precisely the same point in space: a sphere of fuel two millimeters in diameter. They are designed to deliver 1.8 megajoules of energy in a few billionths of a second. That's enough to compress the fuel to a speck 50 micrometers across and heat it up to three million degrees Celsius. The lasers, which were fired together for the first time last month, have so far produced pulses of 1.1 megajoules.

"Depending on how you count it, it's between 60 and 100 times more energetic than any laser system that's ever been built," says Edward Moses, the principle associate director for NIF and Photon Science at LLNL. Eventually, the fusion reactions produced by each pulse are expected to generate at least 10 times the energy delivered by the lasers, a significant net gain that could be useful for generating power.

The $3.5 billion facility, which has been in development for 15 years, was funded primarily as a way to better understand nuclear weapons, after a ban on testing in the 1990s. NIF will produce tiny thermonuclear explosions that give scientists insight into what happens when a nuclear bomb goes off. That data can, in turn, be used to verify computer simulations that help determine whether the United States' nuclear stockpile will continue to work as the weapons age. The data could also provide insight into the processes that power the sun and other stars, and answer other scientific questions. Finally, NIF could serve as a proof-of-concept design for a fusion power plant.

To generate fusion, 192 laser beams are generated, amplified, converted from infrared to ultraviolet light, and then aimed at a small gold canister the size of a pencil eraser. Inside that canister is a sphere containing the fuel: two isotopes of hydrogen called deuterium and tritium. The lasers are positioned all around the sphere to create the temperatures and pressures needed to ignite a fusion reaction. If all goes as planned, some of the hydrogen atoms should fuse, producing helium and releasing energy. This should, in turn, cause more fusion reactions until the fuel runs out. The whole process will take just a few billionths of a second.

First email virus turns 10 history

It appears we have been living with viruses all the time, but if we are looking back in history we find that certain types of viruses are actually not that old. For example, the email-aware virus is turning just 10 today. Melissa, the first virus of this kind, was estimated to have infected more than one million PCs and caused damage in excess of $80 million.

In comparison to the viruses we see today, as well as the possible threat involved, Melissa was not much more than child’s play or a proof of concept – albeit a very potent one. Launched in March of 1999 by 31-year old David Smith, Melissa shut down entire Internet mail systems by clogging corporate email networks with a massive email volume. Carrying the subject line “Here is that document you asked for ... don’t show anyone else;-)”, it spread via Microsoft Word 97 and 2000, Excel 97, 2000 and 2003 and mass-mailed itself to the first 50 contacts in Outlook 97 and 98.

It mailed an infected file, LIST.doc, which contained passwords that allowed access to 80 pornographic websites.

There were at least four variants of Melissa, some of which caused much more damage and deleted critical Windows system files.

David Smith from Aberdeen Township in New Jersey created the original Melissa virus and was sentenced to 20 months in prison back in 2002. A judge in New Jersey also fined Smith $5000 and ordered him to stay clear of computer networks or the internet unless authorized by the court.

Today, Melissa is widely believed to have been the first notable email virus and is, according to MessageLabs, “credited with laying the foundations for the devastating use of botnets that has since allowed cyber criminals to spread malware so rapidly and economically.” The company said it has detected 108 different strains and more than 100,000 copies of the virus to date. MessageLabs said that Melissa remains a constant sight in the malware landscape and about 10 copies are still found every month.

Terrafugia Inc, a company which spun off from MIT, has confirmed that its flying car, deemed a "roadable aircraft" and named Transition, has successfully completed a 37 second test flight. On March 5, 2009, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York the vehicle took flight. It was piloted by Phil Meteer, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who is the company's chief pilot.

Looking like a cross between a Volkswagon Beetle and a small Cessna airplane, the closest thing yet to a flying car took to the skies earlier this month. The startup company Terrafugia just announced that its “roadable aircraft” performed a successful maiden flight. The vehicle is officially considered a light sport aircraft, but on the ground its wings fold up in 30 seconds allowing for a seamless transition from sky to land. Hence the vehicle’s name: Transition.

The maiden flight was short — just 37 seconds — and right over the runway, but as Anna Mracek Dietrich, a Terrafugia co-founder and its chief operating officer, pointed out, flying wasn’t the key goal. “The first flight is great, but first landing is what matters,” she [said]. That apparently went well too, according to Phil Mateer, a retired Air Force test pilot who took the wheel for Transition’s debut flight…. “The flight was remarkably unremarkable,” Mateer said

The Transition runs on regular unleaded gas, has a steering wheel — and pilot’s telescopic stick, with rudder peddles on either side of the gas and brakes [CBS News]. Terrafugia says it can drive at highway speeds on the ground, and cruises at about 115 miles per hour in the air. But despite its familiar car-like features, Terrafugia isn’t really marketing it as a Jetsons-style commuting vehicle that will allow drivers to skip over traffic jams–that’s not feasible because light aircraft can’t easily be flown through poor weather, bad visibility or restricted airspace (as found above cities, for instance).

Instead, Terrafugia says the Transition is designed to give pilots more flexibility. A pilot could switch to driving if she hit bad weather, the company says, and could simply drive her plane home and park it in the garage after a flight, reducing storage and transportation costs.

A new flying car has made its first successful trip down the runway.

The company said it has received a strong response from the developer community since it released the original software development kit, as there are more than 25,000 applications in the App Store. Apple wants that momentum to continue, and the 3.0 software includes more than 1,000 new application programming interfaces.

The App Store was like the iTunes Music Store in that it only allowed an initial point of purchase, but content creators will be able to charge for additional content within the application. For example, if you purchase a game for the iPhone or iPod Touch, a developer could sell more levels within the game. The developer gets to set the price and keep 70% of the revenue, and the transactions are handled through iTunes. Free apps will not be able to charge for content once they've been downloaded.

Apple also is trying to make the iPhone more social, as the updated software will enable users to have peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for things like multiplayer gaming and business card exchanges. The back end is taken care of by Apple's Bonjour, and users don't have to pair devices, as an iPhone will be capable of automatically discovering nearby devices.

Despite wearing a set of duds that looks like little has changed from last year's Handycam HDR-SR11 and HDR-SR12 twins, the HDR-XR520V and HDR-XR500V have had a massive overhaul of the underlying electronics and mechanicals. Like the cheaper HDR-XR200V, the 500-series cameras feature a new CMOS sensor. Dubbed Exmor R — no, we have no idea why you'd want more exes — this new sensor features back-illumination, in which the photo diode is placed above the metal wiring and transistors, the opposite of a conventional front-illuminated sensor. Sony claims that this improves low light performance; during our brief hands-on session with the camera, noise levels seemed lower, but we weren't able to verify if this was at the expense of sharpness or anything else.

Rearing its head for the first time on a consumer camcorder is Sony's in-house G lens, offering 12x optical zoom. Of more interest is an improved optical image stabilisation system, dubbed Optical Active SteadyShot in Sony speak, which is claimed to offer a 10-fold improvement. During our brief walk and shoot test, it produced unerringly smooth footage despite our best efforts to walk with an awkward gait and shaky palm. It will be interesting to see what level of image degradation is incurred for using this optional IS mode — according to reports and Sony staff, there's a slight loss of clarity at the edges in wide-angle mode and isn't really suitable for telephoto work.A new standard inclusion is a GPS receiver, which allows for geotagging one's filmic masterpieces. The camera comes pre-installed with worldwide maps with major arterial routes, allowing you to browse your footage by location on camera. The XR520V comes fitted with a 240GB hard-disk, while the XR500V gets half that.

Apple Looking At OLED For New High End Netbook

The new 10-inch screen device has been contracted out for manufacturing to Taiwanese PC maker Wintek Corp and Quanta Computer who is the world's largest contract notebook maker, and currently builds Mac Book and iMac systems for Apple claims Dow Jones.

Insiders have told SmartHouse that Apple is using a new version of their PC software which includes a mix of iPhone and Mac Book capabilities and that recently they held discussions with Sony about licensing OLED technology into notebooks.

"There are some new features" said a Taiwanese source.

Initially apple said that they would not enter the popular Netbook market however sources have told SmartHouse that Apple had a change of mind after they improved the capability of their touch screen software and because they had been able to get new patents that allows them to deliver new features to a "small notebook". We are also told that Apple is looking at using SDX Flash memory and OLED display technology however pricing could be restrictive unless Apple wants to release a premium high end product.

Sony’s Webbie webcams are some of those products. The Webbies are HD webcams that record MP4 video and take 5 MP photos. Additionally, there is a 5x optical zoom, 20x digital zoom on the MHS-CM1 model and 4 times digital zoom on the MHS-PM1. They record video in 1440×1080 HD and also shoot at 30fps–perfect for web video as that is what YouTube recommends for online video. Additionally, it will suit those of us that love to leave videos on one another’s Facebook wall’s very well. The PM1 will be available April for $170 and the the CM1 is available tonight for $200.

Sony Exhibiting Hybrid Fuel Cell Batteries

The company will display the newest version of its hybrid fuel cell, which contains a Li-on battery and a methanol fuel cell.
Sony’s fuel cell originally showed up on our radar last May, but now the company has two models of the technology: a portable model that comes with a USB connection and leather lanyard, and an internal version that can be used like a normal battery. Both the internal and external batteries have enough juice to power a cell phone for an entire month.

The company hasn’t revealed a release date for the fuel cell yet, but you can bet they’ll be a big hit when they finally reach store shelves.

Mitsubishi is one of those smaller automakers, like Subaru, that one should make sure not to overlook when shopping for a new car. Why? Because, they're good.

Here's an example of formidable new technologies emerging from the research and development depths of a nimble little player in the big bad world of building cars. The i MiEV series (innovative Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle) is a compact vehicle line being developed by Mitsubishi.

Though still at the concept stage, this latest i MiEV features the same multiple, in-wheel electric motors seen in earlier concepts in the series, which is one of the most efficient ways to use electricity to power a vehicle. But since this car is slated to go to market in Europe next year, this is likely very close to what the production version will look like.

This i MiEV will probably have a similar layout to the previously seen i MiEV Sport concept, with two in-wheel electric motors at the front and one on the rear axle. The motors will be plugged into a lithium-ion battery pack tucked in the wheelbase, giving the vehicle a low center of gravity while keeping the weight balanced.

That previous i MiEV Sport concept came with a 200 km (125 miles) range and a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph), which means that Mitsubishi is pushing the technology to the boundaries of marketable, real-world applicability.

And Mitsubishi already have a customer lined up. PSA Peugeot Citroen Group have a contract with the Japanese automaker to supply them with as many as 10,000 units per year of the i MiEV by 2011.

The prototype i MiEV concept will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month next to the i MiEV Sport Air Concept.

New Nissan Qazana Concept 2009

Nissan present Qazana at Geneva, the small crossover vehicle designed for the urban playground. Its design is 'sophisticated' but fun and although definitively a concept car, its form in dimensions and moniker most likely will only make it to the Nissan stable - nicely slotting beneath the Qashqai.Designed by the team at Nissan Design Europe in London around the notion of a city car bringing together a modern day beach buggy and a four-seat motor-bike, the Qazana Crossover aims at rivalling the 1960s spirit of vans, bikes and buggies.
That inspiration comes largely from a mix in strong SUV and 'lean' sports car styling elements. A tall stance, full width grille, short overhangs and the broad shoulders provide for the brawn, while contrasting with but complementing the sporting low roof line, slimline side windows and 20-inch black chrome alloys. The front light cluster consists of lower circular lamps and a daylight running strip all meant to evoke a rally car ready in waiting.

Upon first glance a two-door coupé, the Qazana boasts a second pair of doors. All doors open electronically, the rear dependent on the front doors, and provide good access owing to the removal of B-pillars. Inside is an extension of the exterior, drawing on a mixture of hard and soft materials. 'Forcing through' into the cabin, carbon fibre elements, notably the motorbike-inspired centre console, are 'on display' wrapped by leather. The dashboard features as both touch-screen navigation and controls display and the centre for Nissan's next-generation advanced fully electronic ALL MODE four-wheel drive.Acknowledging the Qazana's outlandishness, Alfonso Albaisa, Vice President of Nissan Design Europe, believes "the car buying public is fed up with the conventional", so expect that "important elements of the concept point to a future Nissan production vehicle. Seagate, AMD Showcase Super Fast SATA Drive

As the year marches on, work proceeds apace on the next big step in the Serial ATA specification. Alternately called SATA Revision (or just Rev) 3 or the updated specification was finalized late last year. This week at the FOSE '09 government tech show in New Orleans, Seagate is becoming the first hard drive manufacturer to publically demonstrate a SATA 6Gbps hard drive. Seagate's technology demo is in partnership with AMD, which has supplied the necessary chipsets to achieve the third-generation SATA interface's fast speeds.The SATA spec bump is a natural evolution. Notes Seagate's Marc Norblitt, "We need to make the interface faster, so the interface doesn't become a bottleneck that causes performance to suffer dramatically. The higher the capacity of the drive, the higher the areal density; the higher the areal density, the more bits you get under the head in the same amount of time." That, Norblitt adds, translates into data being output faster.The read speeds that Seagate has achieved, and will be demonstrating at the show, are about 550 megabytes per second (including command overhead). By comparison, SATA 1.5 achieved 120Mbps, and SATA 3 achieved 250Mbps. The demonstration uses an AMD reference motherboard, with an AMD SATA 6Gbps chipset and CPU, and a prototype 6Gbps drive. The drive uses the same SATA connectors as current-generation SATA drives, and is backward compatible with earlier SATA versions.Although SATA 6Gbps will be here by year's end, Norblitt says he doesn't expect the technology to be needed for another two years. When such drives do ship, they will provide a future-proofed way for individuals to plan ahead. Norblitt expects Seagate will have a SATA 6Gbps drive to market in "late 2009." The company expects to focus on placing the drives in high performance PCs, gaming PCs, and low-end server PCs. -targeting channel."We're targeting customers who want high capacity, high performance disc drives," explains Norblitt.Among the big improvements for SATA 6Gbps: Better power management, and improved native command queuing. With regard to power management, the new spec gives more control to the host or device. Instead of shutting the interface off, it allows it to into a slumber mode, one that's initiated by either the device or the host. The updated native command queuing allows streaming commands. So how will SATA 6Gbps stack up against "SATA is a storage interface; USB is a universal interface," Norblitt says simply. The two interfaces, he adds, will be able to co-exist.

Nokia has also promised that it will follow the lead of Apple, Google and Research in Motion, makers of the Black Berry, by making it easier for third-party developers to write additional software and programs for Nokia handsets. Owners of the N97, which runs the Symbian operating system, can already download thousands of applications to their phone, and Nokia said it is creating "new opportunities" for third parties to develop innovative widgets and internet service applications for Nokia devices.

The laptop is sleek in looks as it has a carbon fiber cover. Carbon fiber is lighter and stronger then magnesium alloy. Lets see if the inside is as posh as the outside.
Now that the design side is mostly out of the way lets look at the technical specs. The laptop has a windscreen that measures 12.1 inches and uses Acer’s Crystal Brit LCD with a white LED backbit display. With the back light being LED there is less power consumed by the screen making it possible to run the laptop longer. With it having a 12.1 inch screen it probably falls out of the classification of being a notebook. Also inside you will find a slot-loading DVS Super Multi Optical drive as well as 2nd generation Dolby Home Theater sound which is a nice touch.

Overall it seems to be an impressive laptop that given the technical side of things should be very capable of running anything you throw at it.
